Description

J E Hoare holds a PhD from SOAS in Japanese history. He joined the Research Department of the FCO in 1969, reaching the rank of Research Counsellor. He served in the British Embassies in Seoul and Beijing, and in 2001 was appointed the first British representative in North Korea. Since his retirement in 2003, he has taught at SOAS, and is a regular TV and radio broadcaster. He has published widely on East Asian affairs.
